Check trees before planning demolition access in Windsor

Trees can affect the route into a site even when no tree removal is proposed. Before assuming a boulevard or front yard can be used for access, identify ownership and raise the tree question with the appropriate authority.

Establish whose tree it is

Windsor’s Forestry Services page says work on City-owned trees is restricted to City staff or approved contractors. This includes City land along the public right-of-way. A tree beside your driveway is not automatically yours to alter.

Use an existing survey or property information to frame the question, and ask the City when ownership is uncertain. The City also lists pre-construction and driveway matters among reasons for a tree inspection request. An enquiry about demolition does not authorise pruning, removal or other tree work.

Show the proposed activity

Explain where vehicles, temporary storage, fencing and loading are being considered. Include trees near that activity in the site sketch even if the trunk is outside the footprint. This gives the reviewer a clearer picture than a general request to work near a tree.

Do not choose a protection distance from a website or infer that a visible gap is enough. Ask the responsible authority or qualified professional to determine the restrictions appropriate to the tree and proposed activity. Keep that direction with the access plan.

Resolve constraints before committing to access

If tree-related restrictions rule out the preferred route, the demolition assessment may need to consider a different setup. Changing the route can also affect public-land permissions, neighbouring access and the items that can be retained. Record the revised arrangement rather than leaving each party to work from an earlier sketch.

Tell YAK which trees or landscape features must be protected and which questions remain open. Tree care is not implied as a YAK service. The aim is to identify an achievable removal scope while the appropriate party determines how tree-related conditions are handled.
