Define the area and boundary
Show the slab on a sketch and mark adjoining concrete, walls, drains and surfaces that remain. Explain whether the request concerns a garage floor, patio, path or another surface. Include any reliable drawings, installation records or previous exposed-edge information.
Do not assume that a slab is independent of a building because a joint is visible. If the work approaches a foundation or changes support conditions, the responsible building professional needs to assess it. The enquiry should distinguish visible slab removal from footings or deeper excavation.
Resolve concealed services and material handling
Provide information about known drains, pipes, electrical feeds and other infrastructure. The project team must determine the required locate and disconnection arrangements before disturbance. Records and surface markings have different purposes; neither should be treated as a general permission to cut anywhere.
Ontario identifies concrete demolition among activities that can produce silica-containing dust. The contractor must assess appropriate controls for the actual work. Tell the assessor about occupied areas, neighbouring access and available space, without attempting to prescribe a method from a generic guide.
Specify the handover surface
State whether the next phase is new concrete, paving, landscaping or inspection. Agree who handles remaining material, excavation, fill, grading and new drainage. Give YAK the marked area, available records and intended site use so the proposed removal can be considered without a guarantee about unknown slab construction or the suitability of the ground beneath it.
Distinguish an intact slab from loose rubble
An intact patio, path or floor needs assessment of its removal boundary and connections. Material already broken into a pile presents a collection and acceptance question instead. Describe which condition you have, rather than using concrete removal for both and leaving the contractor to assume.
For an intact slab, a photograph of the surface and a sketch of retained edges are useful. For loose material, describe its source, visible mixture and loading access without guessing its weight or calling it clean. Waste acceptance still needs confirmation, and neither enquiry promises that excavation, new concrete or landscaping is included.
Bring these details
- Mark retained edges and adjacent foundations.
- Provide known service and construction records.
- Separate removal from excavation and replacement work.
