Before work starts

Hold a useful prestart site handover

A prestart handover brings the agreed documents and the actual property together. It should identify what is ready and what still prevents an activity from starting. The meeting itself is not proof that permits, specialist work or other prerequisites have been completed.

Use the current scope on site

Walk through the removal boundaries and retained elements using the same version of the scope accepted for the project. Confirm room names, access routes and storage areas. Record a discrepancy rather than resolving it with an undocumented instruction.

Have the authorized decision-maker available or agree how decisions will be obtained. Make sure the daily contact understands the approved scope and knows which matters it cannot change without further approval.

Check readiness by responsibility

Review the prerequisites identified during assessment. These may involve permissions, relevant reports, specialist tasks, occupant arrangements or access preparation. Ask the responsible party for the appropriate confirmation; do not infer completion because an appointment was booked.

Make a short outstanding-item list. For each item, record who will resolve it and which activity depends on it. Uncertainty about a required prerequisite should not disappear into a general statement that the site is “ready”.

Record the handover clearly

Keep a dated note of the agreed scope version, people present and unresolved points. Confirm where instructions and project records will be kept. If you are still preparing a YAK enquiry, use the assessment process to identify the prerequisites that a future prestart handover would need to check.
