Identify the complete stair assembly
Explain whether the proposal concerns finish coverings, handrails, balustrades or the staircase itself. Include the landings and adjoining floor openings in the description. Removing carpet from stairs is a different scope from altering their structure.
Provide drawings for the proposed replacement and identify the person responsible for design. Photographs can help describe access, but they do not establish support, compliance or the suitability of an alternative route. If no design exists yet, describe the project as an early assessment request.
Agree who controls access during the work
Tell the project team whether upper or lower floors remain occupied. The responsible professionals must determine access, separation and any temporary arrangements before a stair is removed. An instruction to work around occupants does not answer those questions.
Identify services attached to or passing through the stair area and any material reports relevant to the proposed disturbance. Coordinate the removal with the replacement contractor so the opening is not left in an undefined condition between work packages.
Set a precise handover condition
Ask the replacement contractor what must remain and what they need exposed. Assign responsibility for adjoining walls, flooring, guards and finishing. For a YAK enquiry, send the stair location, scope type, replacement drawings and occupancy constraints. Structural alteration and temporary access design remain specialist decisions, not conclusions that a general demolition page can provide.
