Plan carpet removal without overlooking what lies beneath

Carpet removal can be a straightforward finish change, but the agreed scope still needs a stopping point. Carpet, underlay, attachment systems and the floor below are separate parts of the job. A room may also contain older coverings that are not visible until the upper layer is removed.

List the rooms and attached details

Identify carpeted rooms, stairs, landings and fitted cupboards separately. Note whether the carpet is loose-laid, stretched or apparently bonded, while leaving uncertain installation details for inspection. Describe thresholds and adjacent flooring that need to remain.

State whether furniture will be removed before the work and who is responsible for it. Heavy storage, fitted desks and occupied workstations can prevent access to the full floor. A quotation based on an empty room should not be treated as covering an uncleared space.

Define what a cleared floor means

Ask whether the proposed removal includes underlay, perimeter strips, staples, adhesive residue and transitions. Then obtain the replacement installer’s requirements for the exposed surface. Clearing carpet does not by itself establish that the floor is flat, dry or ready to receive another product.

If the carpet is being removed because of water damage, tell the assessor about the event and provide any relevant reports. Contaminated material or ongoing moisture needs an appropriate assessment; it should not be folded into an ordinary cosmetic removal instruction. Unknown older flooring underneath also needs a review before disturbance continues.

Prepare an accurate enquiry

Give YAK the property type, approximate carpeted area, staircase details and access route. Explain whether the next step is replacement flooring or inspection of the underlying floor. This allows the work boundary and any required specialist involvement to be discussed before a removal scope is accepted.

Bring these details

  • Include stairs, cupboards and transitions.
  • Clarify fixings and adhesive residue.
  • Disclose water damage or known older layers.
