Before work starts

Separate personal belongings from the demolition scope

Separate loose possessions from fixed construction before arranging demolition. A room-clearance request does not automatically include removing finishes, and a demolition quote does not automatically include sorting household contents. Agree those responsibilities so the work area and the owner’s instructions are clear.

Make the decisions before the workday

List fixed elements proposed for demolition separately from furniture and stored possessions. Divide loose items into keep, recover, separately arrange for removal and undecided. Resolve undecided items with the owner before they are left in the work area. Use labels and a simple inventory where several rooms or people are involved.

Remove personal documents, valuables and devices containing private information through a suitable personal arrangement. Do not put identity documents, account details or access codes into project photographs. These items do not help an assessor define demolition.

Agree who moves what

Ask whether any contents handling is included in the proposed scope, and identify exclusions. Heavy, connected or fixed items may need a different assessment from ordinary loose belongings. Do not disconnect equipment or move unsafe objects to make the property appear ready.

Choose a storage location that is outside the agreed work and access routes. A room used for temporary storage may no longer be available for demolition or household use. Explain that limitation before the scope and sequence are finalized.

Unknown, hazardous or restricted contents need an appropriate assessment and confirmed receiving arrangement. Do not treat their presence in a room as permission to add them to ordinary demolition debris. The selected provider and receiving facility must confirm acceptance.

Confirm the cleared condition

Before handover, compare the room with the agreed preparation list. Tell the contractor what remains and why. If the property cannot be cleared as expected, discuss the changed condition instead of leaving the team to make disposal decisions. Tell YAK about occupied or furnished areas when first describing the project.
