Decide whether hardwood is for disposal or possible reuse

A request to remove hardwood is different from a request to recover it for reuse. Recovery depends on how the boards are fixed, their condition and the requirements of the person receiving them. Treat reuse as an assessed objective, not an automatic outcome of careful removal.

Confirm what the recipient needs

Identify whether the flooring is solid wood, engineered wood or an unknown product. If available, share product information, previous repairs and the intended reuse location. A recipient may need consistent dimensions, usable edges or a particular finish condition; those requirements should be known before work begins.

Record whether the aim is to retain all possible boards, selected matching pieces for repairs, or only a sample. Give retained material a named destination. A pile left on site without collection and storage arrangements is not a completed salvage plan.

Define the limits and uncertainty

Nails, adhesive, concealed damage and previous alterations can affect recovery. Agree what happens if the condition makes reuse impractical. Avoid assuming a guaranteed usable quantity before the flooring is assessed. If there are suspect coatings, backing materials or adhesive, their assessment comes before decisions about disturbance.

Keep subfloor repairs and preparation for replacement flooring separate. Also identify skirtings, thresholds and floor sections that remain. An instruction to recover boards must not inadvertently extend into removing a structural floor or dismantling a stair assembly.

Ask for an assessed option

For an enquiry, provide overall room photographs, accessible edge details and the recipient’s acceptance requirements. Ask whether recovery can be considered and what limitations should be recorded. YAK can review the removal request without representing recovered material as tested, graded or suitable for a new structural use.

Choose removal or recovery before comparing proposals

If the priority is a replacement floor, ask for a removal boundary covering boards, fixings and any agreed adhesive work. If the priority is matching an existing room, ask for a separately assessed recovery option and identify the boards the recipient needs. These requests can involve the same room but different handling and storage responsibilities.

A useful hypothetical brief is: remove the bedroom flooring for replacement, assess the matching doorway boards for recovery, retain the hallway floor, and leave subfloor repairs for the flooring installer. Record what should happen if the requested boards cannot be recovered; do not treat a reuse preference as a guaranteed yield.

Bring these details

  • Name the recipient and intended reuse.
  • Agree a fallback if recovery is impractical.
  • Separate boards, trims and subfloor work.
